Brasil Telecom (BrT) demonstrated its high-quality video distribution technology via ADSL networks specially for ABTA, the national pay-television industry association, this week. The demo, held Wednesday, October 24, resulted from a meeting between ABTA and Yon Moreira, BrT vice president for the Turbo Vídeo project. BrT is keen to show cable companies that the technology provides attractive opportunities for partnering, while cable operators have long argued that the law prevents delivery of TV subscription services without the involvement of a licensed pay-TV provider. Yon Moreira has been nurturing the idea of distributing video signals via ADSL networks ever since he was a director of Telefonica Empresas, the Spanish-owned telco?s corporate business unit. At one point Telefonica actually advertised such a service, but the project was put on hold owing to problems with its main supplier, PixStream/Cisco. At Futurecom next week in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, BrT is to name its first two certified suppliers of ADSL video decoding interface technology.
