TVA is the first pay-TV company to apply to Anatel for a license to provide telephone services. The application is for areas in which the MSO operates. It wants to offer local service in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Porto Alegre (TVA?s operation in the latter is practically inactive, with very few subscribers). In addition, it wants to offer long-distance and international service out of São Paulo. Under current rules any company can apply for a license to provide local telephony. TVA has been pursuing partnerships with telecoms companies for some time. Most market watchers expected the focus to be on infrastructure sharing.
