The person most likely to succeed Luiz Antônio Viana as CEO of Net Serviços is Francisco Valim, formerly CEO of Net Sul and until last week chief financial officer of Telemar. Mr Valim was a strong candidate when Moysés Pluciennik departed Net Serviços, at the end of 2001. According to well-informed sources there are other options, but the choice will probably be ratified on Monday, January 27, so that negotiations with creditors aren?t disrupted by the change of command.
The reasons for Luiz Antônio Viana?s resignation are nebulous. His relationship with controlling shareholders, especially Globo, has been difficult at times as a result of measures that involve conflicting interests. His positions frequently differed from Globo?s, especially with regard to programming. When these differences began to present obstacles to day-to-day operations, the parties involved, including Mr Viana himself, decided it would be convenient to find a new CEO and avoid complicating the company?s situation still further.
