Clubs receive proposal for prepaid sports channel

An unusual project was presented Tuesday, November 26, to some of Brazil?s leading soccer clubs. Sport Promotion, a sports marketing firm that supplies services to TV Globo, proposes to set up a channel featuring top clubs for distribution by DTH operators using prepaid technology. ?We?ve made the first move by submitting this proposal to the clubs and we know there are a lot of details to work out. That?s all I can say for now,? commented José Francisco Coelho Leal, a director of Sport Promotion. The clubs are known to be negotiating separately with TV Globo. Sport Promotion says it?s partnering with Casablanca, a leading production company that for some years has been developing a satellite TV arm called TeleImage. If the proposed channel leaves the drawing-board it will be called Canal Brasileiro de Futebol and will offer pay-per-view as well as prepaid programming packages. It remains to be seen whether the channel would use an existing DTH operator or one of the many DTH licenses granted but not yet in operation. The business plan suggests a monthly charge of about 5 US Dollars per month for a complete package of soccer games, and product sales via a merchandising channel. Clubs and the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF) would contribute pay-TV rights and in exchange receive a percentage of revenue from the basic channel, PPV, and sales via the merchandising channel.
