Sky wants to have HDTV-ready boxes by 2005

According to CEO Ricardo Miranda, Sky Brazil will begin transmitting high-definition TV by 2005. Sky currently offers two widescreen channels (for receivers with an aspect ratio of 16:9), which subscribers love, he said at a panel session during the SET 2003 Conference on Thursday, September 4. ?HDTV is the direct successor to the wide screen,? he said.
There isn?t enough HD programming and scale is needed to import the appropriate IRDs, he added. Nevertheless Sky is committed to implementing HDTV within the next 24 months.
It?s worth recalling that in the U.S. broadcasters haven?t begun transmitting HDTV but some pay-TV channels have launched high-definition versions precisely to take advantage of the DTH segment?s technical capability.
