Neotec concludes digital MMDS trials, next step is commercial agreement

Early this month Neotec concluded its digital technology trials in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, and the association of MMDS operators has already recognized NextNet as its first certified supplier. Carlos André Lins de Albuquerque, chairman of Neotec, says commercial negotiations are under way.
The trials lasted four months and involved several different suppliers as well as various service options, such as video over IP, voice, aspects of mobility enabled by new MMDS technologies, and of course Internet access.
NextNet is a U.S.-based company specializing in solutions for multicellular digital MMDS access with mobility that enable high-speed data transmission without depending on line of sight.
Neotec and NextNet are now starting talks on a sales strategy for Brazil. Neotec has a mandate to negotiate on behalf of all its members with the aim of achieving scale economies.
According to Mr Albuquerque, the trials have also made it clear that the new digital MMDS technologies have none of the problems with line of sight and topography characteristic of analog and first-generation digital platforms.
Another conclusion is that the technological solutions recently developed for MMDS are complementary to Wi-Fi (very high speed mobile access) or even substitutes for Wi-Fi depending on the business plan.
Neotec plans to hold trials in Brasília soon, possibly followed by other cities.
