The Society of TV and Telecommunications Engineers (SET) met last week in São Paulo with representatives of TV stations, production companies, manufacturers of professional and consumer equipment, educational establishments and journalists to discuss proposals for a pilot digital TV station to be set up by the end of the year. The idea was first raised in public at NAB 2002 in Las Vegas last month. The pilot DTV station will be a nonprofit entity for technological and market research. Anyone interested can join the project and suggest ways of running it better. At last week?s São Paulo meeting, for example, representatives of educational establishments said they wouldn?t be able to afford the proposed semiannual membership fee and the organizers promised to consider exemptions.
