DTV: standard may be chosen by elimination

The direction in which Anatel will take the debate on the choice of a digital terrestrial TV standard for Brazil is becoming increasingly clear. Much remains to be done before a final decision is reached and it won?t come any time soon, but analysts say recent remarks by officials of Anatel suggest it they probably won?t end up specifying ATSC, DVB or ISDB-T. Instead they will establish a set of technical and commercial requirements, and only one of the platforms certified by the ITU will be able to meet them all. Meanwhile, the Communications Ministry hasn?t decided when to publish the DTV policy it promised last week. Given the need for prior discussions with Anatel, a public consultation is certainly quite a long way off.
