ATSC advocates DTV receiver manufacturing hub in Manaus

Tommy Bruce, visiting Brazil last week with an ATSC delegation, wants to see Brazil exporting digital television sets to the rest of the Americas. ?Brazil is in a unique situation,? he said. ?It has the chance to swing the Americas behind a single DTV standard. Manaus has the export capacity and LG plans massive investment in the region if the ATSC standard is chosen.? Richard Lewis, vice president of Zenith for research and technology, said the ATSC standard is totally open and local manufacturers will be free to develop software and equipment. As for local production of components, advocated by the HDTV Brazil association, he said anyone in South America can make components and pay relatively low royalties ? at least to Zenith, which owns the VSB modulation technology. However, he went on, local production of components will depend on the scale of the domestic market for digital TV sets.
