Brazil will lead Mercosur in choice of DTV standard

Luiz Guilherme Schymura, director-general of Anatel, said Tuesday, May 28, that Brazil will choose a standard for digital terrestrial television after joint consultations with the other Mercosur countries (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Chile). ?But Brazil will lead the process,? he stressed. The more countries involved, the more bargaining power they will have to extract matching benefits such as technology transfer, he said. Congress will be asked to contribute to the decision-making process, even if this means it will take more time, Mr Schymura said. However, he refused to say whether it will, telling journalists to ask Communications Minister Juarez Quadros. ?The minister is the one who knows. He?s already talked to you about that,? he said.
