Communications Minister Juarez Quadros has nominated Luiz Guilherme Schymura de Oliveira to replace Renato Guerreiro as director-general of Anatel. Mr Schymura de Oliveira is an economist and has acted as a consultant to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) as well as advising on the privatization of Furnas (electricity). The nomination must be ratified by the Senate. According to Juarez Quadros, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso was consulted and gave his approval. Asked why Antônio Carlos Valente, Mr Guerreiro?s deputy, wasn?t nominated, Mr Quadros stressed the need for a change. ?It?s important Anatel send the markets a sign that it means to focus more on economic issues,? he said.
